An Introduction to Air Compressors and Air Compressor Replacement Parts

Air compressors typically have replaceable parts that are available at the local hardware store. An air compressor is a machine that is used for a number of purposes, most commonly for pumping air into tires and powering nail guns, spray guns, wrenches and other tools. They are also used to supply moderate-pressure air for industrial processes in petroleum and cement industries.

Types of Air Compressors

There are two main types of air compressors. These are the piston type, single stage, two stage and compact air compressors.

1. Piston Type Air Compressors

Piston type air compressors come with tanks that store compressed air. The motor only stops when the tank is full of air. The motor automatically starts back up when the air pressure inside the tank drops whenever air is released. The two types of piston air compressors are single stage and two stage air compressors.

2. Compact Air Compressor

The other type of air compressor is the compact air compressor, which is smaller in size because they do not come with attached air tanks. Because of this, compact air compressors must run continually in order to supply compressed air. This is the type used to power caulk or spray guns and to inflate tires.

Air compressors are also sold according to whether they use oil for lubrication or not. Oil-less compressors are good for lighter jobs and are considered low-maintenance compressors because they do not use oil for lubrication. Some compressors are splash coated with oil, Teflon, or another material to reduce the wear and tear generated by friction. However, repair costs on oil –less compressors can be expensive.

Oil compressors, on the other hand use oil for lubrication which requires the owners to change the oil on an regular basis. Oil lubricated compressors are often used for industrial processes.

You can also find air compressors that are powered by electricity or powered by gas. Electric air compressors can be powered by electricity and can be used anywhere where an electrical outlet is present. Gas air compressors are good options in areas where electricity is limited but they should not be used in places where ventilation is low.

Air Compressor Replacement Parts

There are various parts of air compressor replacement parts, from aftercoolers, bearings and blushings to crankshafts, lubricants, filters, packings and pistons. The main components of air compressors are rotary parts, piston parts, air and oil separators and filters as well as coolants.

Where to Buy

You can buy air compressor replacement parts at your local hardware store and in online hardware stores. More options are available to you when you look for replacement parts online, but make sure that you are buying from honest and reputable sellers before shelling out some cash.
